Expanded knob/button layout in the selected channel editing (Channel Filter/Equalizer) for future WING models
The current Channel Dynamics/Equalizer section needs improvement, and hopefully future versions of the WING will have it redesigned.
I would like to propose an improved layout, based on the idea for alternative EQ controls in the selected channel section of the current WING and Custom Controls preset for EQ/FILTER editing.
In essense, the EQ knobs will control Frequency, Q (Width), and Gain in the current EQ band, and new 8 direct select buttons and a B/W sub-display will improve visual feedback.
The following elements should be included in the new layout:
-
The exising 5 control knobs, to adjust EQ/FILTER parameters per each band:
Gain - Gain/level, in dB
Width - Bandwidth, i.e Q-factor
Freq1 - Frequency, in Hz or kHz
Freq2 - secondary Frequency, in Hz or kHz
Mix - global EQ Blend/mix/gain ratio
-
The 8 direct select buttons for fixed EQ/FILTER bands, in 2 rows in a grid of 4×2:
PEQ 1-4
-
LO (L, LOW), PEQ 5-6, HI (H, HIGH)
These buttons will replace the current Gain, Width and Freq buttons, to provide:
direct selection of EQ/FILTER bands for editing, with active band lit in the orange light;
EQ/FILTER band status, i.e. white backlight for available bands, and dimmed (no backlight) for unavaiable bands.
-
A dedicated B/W screen, to display EQ parameters and soft labels, including:
available band number/abbreviation - diminished (or not shown) for unavailable bands,
band frequency - not shown for unavailable bands,
accented (highlighted) band number / abbreviation for the active band,
current values for the editing parameters above,
parameter names and band names / abbreviations.
The EQ and FILTER buttons on the left, to make a combined Channel Filter/Equalizer section, with FILTER button moved from the top row in place of the current SHIFT button.
Here are the mockups of this proposed EQ/FILTER section; note the current 2.4" channel editing display and status-LED section is replaced with an ultra-wide 8" touchscreen display from another idea below.

The rightmost button in the top row would replaced by a 'soft' button, similar to the one in the Main display section.
Variant 1
B/W display, 5 knobs, 8 band select buttons

Variant 2
B/W display, 2 knobs, 8 band select buttons
This version puts the B/W display in place of control knobs to save vertical space; EQ/FILTER parameters will be controlled by the 6 knobs below the channel editing display.

Variant 3
5 knobs, 8 direct select buttons, no B/W display.

NB this idea is a combination of three separate proposals:
1) dedicated Custom Controls presets for parametric EQ/filter control;
2) an alternative knob assignment for selected channel editing;
3) an ultrawide 8" display, or dual 5" displays, in the selected channel edit section.
PS. See also the idea for a WING Compact-based control surface: this selected channel editing section could be implemented as a standalone external control surface in the series of WING Compact-based control surfaces, to accompany a 12-channel extender and a 8-channel master section with custom controls.
